SOUTH is another of our collaborations with Slanted Door chef Charles Phan. It is located in the new SFJAZZ Center, designed by Mark Cavagnero, which is one of San Francisco’s best new buildings. We took our material and detailing cues from that design, so that the restaurant space would complement the adjacent lobby. The building is completely transparent on the ground level, so the bar and dining all become a part of the street theatre. Everything is exposed, even the kitchen, so the plan was laid out in a linear progression – telling the story from cooking to service to dining. It is a celebration of the act of preparing a meal or drink for a guest – a nod to the artistry of the chef/bartender, much as the building celebrates the talents of the musicians.
