A narrow slice of a building, 424 Jessie is the remodel of an eight-story concrete warehouse into six flats, with the top two floors being combined into a dramatic penthouse unit. Located in a designated historic district, the building is also a listed historic structure, limiting potential expression on the exterior. Because of the historic designation we were allowed to retain (with some redesign) the exterior fire escape as a second means of egress - an element that helps dramatize the narrow profile of the front facade. A gently curving wood-clad hallway leads one from the rear elevator to the front living area, whose open plan includes the kitchen and dining area. Stained concrete floors, concrete countertops, and an exposed steel seismic framework recall the industrial heritage of the building. While finishes such as wood cabinetry, glass wall tiles, and low voltage accent lighting celebrate the modern transformation. Client: Martin Building Company
