Building Lobbies
9th. Street
San Francisco, California

This was an old 3 story concrete warehouse that was being converted to office use, and our job was to give it a lobby, a staircase, and an entrance. The solution was to cut a large 3 story shaft for the lobby/staircase, introduce a strip skylight along the back wall to balance the light, and then just design a really dramatic staircase as the "sculpture" within the space. Plate steel construction combined with precast concrete treads provided an economical solution, leaving enough budget to allow a glass canopy and a stacked glass entry window that provides some stylistic punch at the entry.
